With a more muted color palette than other works in his canon, I remember when I was a quarter back features many symbolic objects, many of which refer back to the title. A headless figure is placed centrally in the picture plane, appearing more anthropomorphic than human. Marked with stripes and numbers, in red, white and blue shades the ‘body’ alludes to sports jerseys and athletic shoes. The left ‘arm’ and right ‘leg’ have been cut, with shadow-like renderings at their respective bases. An image of subdued nostalgia, it in many ways is suggestive of Ryan’s own history with sports and his continued activity with lacrosse.
